Setting up climate MRV systems in Africa necessarily requires that climate change actors themselves understand such systems, regardless of their affiliation. The establishment of a network at the national and regional level is an important approach to bring together the different stakeholders for open and timely discussion, collaboration and sharing of information and experiences.

The WA-MRV program has experimented with the establishment of such spaces through the creation of the Climate MRV Community of Practice (CoP) to address this recent and urgent issue related to climate change and sustainable development in African countries.

The main missions of the CoP are to increase awareness and familiarity with climate objectives, policies and the status of climate MRV systems within each country; support sovereign approaches to strengthen institutional arrangements and climate governance structures in each country and improve the relevance and effectiveness of national climate MRV systems.

From February 2021 to November 2021, the WA-MRV has supported 11 countries in the region to set up their communities of practice; and today nearly 64 virtual meetings have been organized with over 2645 participants. Despite the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the virtual meetings, 10 months of intense activities have allowed a larger group (composed of sectoral public institutions, legislators, academics, the private sector, NGOs, students, the press, community actors, etc.) to discuss, exchange and share knowledge and information on the subject.

This space was able to connect even those not living in the regional capitals of the member countries and helped build the foundations and pillars of a broad understanding and ownership necessary to integrate the seeds of MRV climate systems in a sovereign way.

In order to give a clearer picture, the WA-MRV Program proposes a summary infographic to give a global overview of the meetings held in the different countries and the related reports.
